EPA Enforcement & Compliance Audit Program

The US EPA announced a new Compliance & Enforcement Initiative Policy that targets Public Works and other transportation related facilities and has begun inspecting sites to determine if they are in compliance with environmental regulations. Fines for discovered violations can be expensive and accompanied by unfavorable press releases based on enforcement actions.

We recommend participation in the Compliance-Audit program.

Benefits to Performing a Compliance Program

  • Increases regulatory awareness at all levels of the organization
  • Decreases risks of accidental chemical, petroleum releases, spills or injuries
  • Decreases liability for the municipality
  • Being pro-active and an environmental steward

 Typical Violations Identified On Site

  • Inspections of above ground storage tanks not up to date
  • Underground storage tanks not upgraded to meet federal standards
  • Lack of an updated Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures Plan
  • Unpermitted discharges from floor drains or vehicle washing areas
  • Hazardous waste not identified and collected
  • Improperly labeled hazardous waste or used oil
  • Fluorescent lamps not properly managed
  • Parts washer open or unlabeled
  • Improperly stored road salt
