Arcadia-Zurich-Norris Road Bridge Replacement
The County wanted to replace the deteriorated three-span steel multi-girder bridge with a bridge that is more hydraulically efficient, structurally sound, and low maintenance. The existing bridge was replaced with a single span pre-stressed concrete box beam superstructure on a 12 inch steel pile foundation, filled with concrete. The hydraulic conditions were improved with the longer single span and by raising the roadway profile approximately 2.5 feet in the vicinity of the bridge. The new bridge was made wider to accommodate the 11 foot travel lanes and four foot shoulders. The new width better handles the wider roadway approach section and new bridge rail. The total length of pavement work to raise the profile is 585 feet, all of which required full depth reconstruction. The new bridge has a relatively small superstructure depth and a smooth bottom surface to reduce the potential for snagging and will lower maintenance costs over the life of the bridge.
