Deck Replacement of Five Bridges on I-278

Construction Inspection

As a sub-consultant, PDG performed Construction Quality Assurance services for the New York State Department of Transportation’s Design Build Contract D900041, to rehabilitate 4 bridges (BINs:1067821 -18,780 SF deck area, 1067822-20,950 SF deck area, 1075751-14,440 SF deck area, 1075752-14,340 SF deck area) on I-278 (the Staten Island Expressway) in Richmond County and one bridge (BIN 1065260 – 12,970 SF deck area) over I-278 (the Gowanus Expressway) in Kings County.

Major elements of the work for the bridges include:

  • Removal and replacement of reinforced concrete deck.

  • Removal and replacement of various superstructure deteriorated steel beams.

  • Replacement of several deteriorated bridge bearings.

  • Repair of various deteriorated reinforced concrete substructure elements.

  • Construction of new bridge railings, drainage system, highway lighting, and various safety appurtenances.

  • Any demolished material may contain asbestos and other hazardous materials.

  • Utility: Relocation of electrical cables, telephone cables, and ITS facilities are expected. 

  • Work Zone Traffic Control: during construction of the project, traffic detours and lane closures occur during weekdays, weeknights and weekends.
